Day 60 - Friday 6th July
I am at my Caffe-Society store today checking that all is well. More telephone calls later and emails.
I got my copy of Fair Comment today, the publication produced by the Fairtrade Foundation. I think it is helpful to high light again some of the key aspects of Fairtrade. The Fairtrade mark that you see on more and more products these days is an independent consumer certification label that appears on products that are certified in accordance with Fairtrade standards. Fairtrade Standards -Minimum social, economic and environmental requirements, which producers must meet to be certified, and progress requirements that encourage continuous improvement in these areas to develop farmers organisations or the terms and conditions of estate workers.
Fairtrade Certified Producer Group : Either an association of farmers or a company dependent on hired labour that produces one or more commodities for which there are Fairtrade Standards and that has been certified to meet those standards. Once certified, they are added to the Fairtrade producer list and registered companies can buy from them under Fairtrade terms. Some Fairtrade certified producer groups are able to sell all of their product under FAIRTRADE terms while others sell only a very small percentage. It is only by increasing the amount sold as Fairtrade that producer groups are able to receive a steady stream of additional income to improve their lives.
Fairtrade minimum price: This defines the minimum price that a buyer of Fairtrade Products has to pay the producer. The minimum price is set following a consultative process with Fairtrade producers and traders and guarantees that producers receive a price which covers the cost of sustainable production. When the market price is higher than the Fairtrade minimum price the market price is paid.
Fairtrade premium : The Fairtrade premium is money paid on top of the Fairtrade minimum price that is invested in social, environmental and economic development projects decided upon democratically by a committee of producers within the organisation or of workers on a plantation. Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International.

Day 58 - Wednesday 4th July
Hi, we are back for the last 33 days of the project. Its eyes down and away we go. Will I succeed after my break for promotion, filming and fact finding tour. Keep reading to see how I manage to complete this project successfully. Someone did mention that, maybe I had extended the time given on this project due to my holiday. I must say that when I first started this project the aim was always to complete it in 90days. I work full time running my Fairtrade Store here on the Island so I gave myself 90 days to develop this project. I also stated on my early Blogs that I had booked a Holiday in July 06 for this year so would not include this time as part of the project, nor would I include weekends, as it is not really possible to talk to businesses at weekends. I feel that despite allowing 90days to complete the project is ambitious, whatever I achieve will benefit the Charities and my environmental project, while raising awareness about the issues in the Blogs have written. I hope my Blogs enlighten and create interest as I record my journey from start to finish.

The Weekend - Holiday
Re-visited the town of Lahaina and have a look at the local arts and crafts being either made or painted under what I was told to be the largest Banyan Tree in the USA. More than sixty feet high and casting shade on two thirds of an acre, was planted in April 1873 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of Protestant missionary work in Lahaina.

Friday 29th June - Holiday
I got the free bus into Lahaina today to look at the Art Galleries and some cultural sites. I came across The Baldwin Home a two story structure which was the home of the protestant medical missionary, Dwight Baldwin. And his family from mid 1830’s to 1868, the house served as a medical office and as a general centerfor missionary activity with a seaman’s chapel and Christian reading rooms for ships masters and men nearby. The Baldwins had a fine garden of native and introduced plants: kukui, kou, banana, guava, figs and grape arbors. The home and grounds were restored by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation in the early 1960’s complete with the many pieces of original furniture and other antiques of the period. Another museum was the WO HING Museum on front street which was once affiliated with the Chee Kung Tong, a chineses fraternal society with branches all over the world. This one dates from early in the century, when the Wo Hing Society had a hundred members. The Chinese were among the earliest immigrants of Hawaii and became a powerful force in the commerce of Lahaina.

Thursday 28th June -Holiday
Today I went to the beach near the hotel and went snorkelling. What a surprise when I came across some Turtles, just inches away. It looked like an adult and a young turtle together. Truly fantastic. !
There were a number of colourful fishes swimming around the bay in their natural habitat.
