Day 70 - Friday 20th July
Here on the Isle of Wight some 70 miles south of London (UK) we have had the hottest April on record, and one of the driest on the Island since records began. This is followed by the wettest May for a generation. One day in May more than 2 inches of rain fell in 12 hours and though water resources are generally in a healthy position, there is still no room for complacency. As summer approaches we shouldn’t forget about saving water. An extended period of hot dry weather could start to put water supplies and wetlands under pressure. Taking the past year as a whole it has been the hottest 12 month period in the UK since 1659. Hawthorns has been a symbol of May since ancient times but this year it was flowering in early April. Flowers such as snowdrops are blooming earlier in the spring, Oaks are leafing earlier and butterflies such as Holly Blues are appearing earlier. The evidence of Climate Change is all around us and further afield, at the polar ice caps and on coral reefs due to warmer seas.
The overwhelming body of scientific opinion is that Climate Change is happening at an accelerated rate due to human activities, this is reflected in erratic weather patterns. The message is that everyone can do something to reduce their contribution through changing their diet, saving energy and conserving water and other resources. Once my project is over, next month I will show you what I did with my store to make it more environmentally friendly and the strong connection with Fairtrade, and the developing countries all over the world.

Day 69 - Thursday 19th July
If you have been reading my Blogs over the weeks, you would have read about my wish to design and build a ecofriendly green fairtrader store here on the Island. I have found a company called Engenius Ltd who specialists in Low Carbon Building Programmes. I will be talking to them amongst others about the latest techniques that will help my store become more environmentally friendly. There service includes Carbon Planning, the best way to use rain water, and there has been plenty of that recently, the use of solar panels, wind turbines for power. I will let you know the results of the site survey in late August after the end of this project.
